Sure you can throw old newspapers into the recycle bin, but it’s a lot more fun and interesting to turn your own trash into treasure. Why not make newspaper art? It’s an easy, eco-friendly project that’s perfect for both kids and adults.

Paper Mache Newspaper Art

Collect old newspapers to use as your canvas and discarded containers to use as the molds, like cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

Plan your paper mache newspaper art design by getting creative with your molds. Glue or tape containers together to create the basic shapes you’re looking for. Regular balloons work well for spherical shapes, but you can really get creative with the special “modeling” balloons often used by clowns and other entertainers to make animal balloons.

Create a paper mache mixture out of three parts flour to one part water in a large container. Stir well until blended.

Tear your newspaper into thin strips. Dip each one into the paper mache mixture, saturating it completely. Drape each strip over your mold until it is completely covered with one layer of newspaper. Work out any bubbles and smooth out the edges.

Let the first layer of newspaper dry completely. Then repeat the process three more times, again letting it dry completely in between each layer. Remember to smooth out all bubbles and edges.

Tear the copy paper into strips. Dip into the paper mache, saturate and add as your final layer to your newspaper art. You’ll get a much better effect with your paints if you have this white surface to work with instead of the newsprint. Again, let it dry completely.

Collage Newspaper Art

Find a frame with glass and cardboard backing to make newspaper art collage. Take out the cardboard to use as your canvas. This is the easiest way to have a ready-made frame rather than trying to find one the perfect size for a random piece of cardboard.

Cut out images, words, headlines and articles from the newspaper. You can go with a theme – like the environment – or simply a collection of whatever catches your eye.

Arrange your newspaper clippings onto the cardboard canvas from the frame. There’s no right or wrong way to do this. The arrangement simply depends on what’s pleasing to you.

Use your acid-free double-sided tape to attach your newspaper clippings to the cardboard canvas. Acid-free is critical to preserve the newspaper. Avoid glue at all costs as this will warp and destroy the effect.

Spray your collage newspaper art with the archival spray once you have everything taped down. This will help prevent the newspaper from getting yellow and brittle over time. You should be able to find archival spray at your local craft store.

Replace your cardboard canvas back in its frame so that your collage is protected by glass. Just be sure to let the archival spray dry first.

Hawaiian art and tradition are beautiful and interesting. A luau is a celebration that includes a feast along with singing and dancing. Having students create artwork and traditional Hawaiian garb creates a backdrop for a luau celebration that can be enjoyed in the classroom with students or including friends and family of the students. These art projects can be created with basic materials and accomplished as a group.

Stringing a Lei

A lei is a traditional flower necklace made as a welcome gift for friends and family in Hawaii. It is made with colorful tropical flowers traditionally in Hawaii, but they can be created in the classroom using colorful construction paper and markers.
Gather materials needed such as construction paper, markers, hole punches, string and scissors. Position them in a location easily accessible to your students. Post images of flowers around the room along with pictures of the landscape of Hawaii for motivation.

Discuss with students the tradition of making lei necklaces. Talk about the parts of a flower and how they will be creating their own unique flowers to use when they make their own lei. Have students cut out flower shapes from the construction paper and then use markers to create designs on them. Punch a hole in the middle of the flowers. Use a length of string to string the paper flowers. Tie the string when students are finished.

Tapa Cloth

When the students have finished making their leis, they can create a traditional painting in the style of a Hawaiian tapa cloth, which is made from the bark of trees and then printed or painted on using interesting natural designs. Print out examples of traditional tapa cloth for students to use as motivation (see references).

Using recycled paper bags will create the impression of original tapa cloth. Cut the paper bags into large squares before you begin to work with the students. Gather items to use to print onto paper bags such as plastic circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. Wooden blocks or plastic building blocks can also be used. Put brown and black paint onto paper plates and place them on a work space along with paper bag squares.

Have the students press the shapes into paint and then onto the paper bags. Encourage them to create a pattern or design with the shapes to replicate traditional tapa cloth. When the students are finished, hang the tapa cloth around the room.

Hawaiian Luau

A Hawaiian luau is a special way to celebrate an occasion. Have a luau in the classroom in celebration of a special day. Have students wear their leis, eat their lunches in the classroom and look at their tapa cloths around the room. Play traditional Hawaiian music and provide some traditional Hawaiian foods for students to try.

Cut strips from leftover paper bags from the tapa project to create grass skirts. Cut the bags into strips, then either tape or staple the strips of paper onto the string. Tie the string around the student’s waist and have them dance to the Hawaiian music.

Bamboo curtains can be used where privacy is not a concern. A doorway without a door is a common place to hang bamboo curtains. They serve as a prominent division of the rooms. Bamboo curtains are also used as window treatments that allow the sunlight to flow into the room. Another use of the curtains is for a simple wall art. They can be hung in rooms without windows to give an illusion of a window. Making your own bamboo curtain is simple but a considerable amount of time will be dedicated.

Measure the length of your doorway or other area where you will mount your curtain. Add 5 inches. This is your length measurement.

Cut the mono-filament line two times as long as the length measurement.

Drill a small hole through the side of two bamboo beads. The hole will be toward one end of the bead.

Thread one bead half way up the mono-filament line. Make sure the line ends are even. Tie the ends of the line with a double overhand knot. Allow the bead to rest in the bend of the line. The result is a double strand of line, approximately 12 inch shorter than your length measurement. Mark the line 9 1/2 inches from the knot.

Thread bamboo beads on the double line by sliding them over the knot down to the first bead. Continue adding beads until they reach the 9 1/2 inch mark. Place the second drilled bead on the end with the drilled small hole toward the top.

Cut a piece of mono-filament line 6-inches long. Thread half of the line through the drilled small hole in the top bead. Tie the 6-inch line around the original double line. Tie a triple overhand knot. Thread the extra line down through the bamboo bead. Add a drop of construction adhesive on the knot.

Tie the empty end of the bead strand on a curtain rod. Use a triple overhand knot to hold the strand to the rod. Add a drop of glue to the knot. Clip excess line.

Repeat for additional strands until you reach the width of the curtain rod. The number of strands you will need will be determined by how big your beads are and how dense you want the curtain to be.

Most products available for dyeing cloth involve a dye and a fixing agent. They are expensive, complicated and sophisticated craft items that can be very satisfying to an experienced crafter. An easier way to get bright colors — in a tie-dye shirt, for example — involves simple tubes of acrylic paint that are thinned with water to get the color you want.

Decide what colors you want and whether you’re going to do a pattern, solid color or a gradient. Look for colors that are transparent, rather than translucent or opaque. Pthalo Blue, Pthalo Green, Dioxazine Violet, Alizarin Crimson are all very transparent colors. Certain colors, such as deep true black, may take several dippings, but will be long-lasting and very brilliant when you are done. Overdye with deep purple and dark brown for a rich black, or deep blue and dark brown and black together for a jazzier black.

Put a bit of paint in a bucket of water and stir it. The result will be a solution of paint that’s transparent but shows the color. For a flat color, do not roll, twist or tie the garment. Put it in, swish it around and make sure it’s thoroughly soaked. Pull it out and let it hang dry. Rinse after it’s dry. If it’s too light, put it in the acrylic-paint dye bucket again and overdye it till it’s dark enough to suit you.

To dye a sheet or garment in a gradient — lighter at one end and darker at the other — mix your color or colors. Do a very thin rinse of the color for the lightest part, followed by slightly darker ones. For example, dye fabric a gradient of yellow, green and blue-green. Make attractive knitted projects with yarn dyed in a gradient pattern.

For tie-dyeing, the process is pretty much the same as doing a gradient. Dye a section of your garment in the lightest color first, tying it first to get white streaks and circles. Bundle your T-shirt longwise to make stripes, or grab sections of the shirt and wrap a rubber band around them to make a circular pattern. For batik effects, drip melted wax or paraffin for a resist before dyeing. Rinse the fabric in hot water to melt and remove the wax afterward.

Using a paintbrush and thinned acrylic paint at ink consistency, paint designs on your fabric. This is a way to add details without soaking the entire garment after the basic dyeing is done. Try not to use thick applications, which may get stiff as the paint does. Use the least paint you can for the effect you want, and you’ll have a spectacular piece of wearable art.

Teenagers all around the world are getting passionately involved in environmental causes and action against climate change. Teens can make informed choices regarding what they eat, what they buy and what energy they consume. As they straddle the space between childhood and adulthood, the positive practices in which teens engage will hopefully carry on through the rest of their lives. Their choices could influence the actions of other teens around them.

Recycle. There are a variety of ways that teens can recycle materials. Techno-savvy teens can recycle their used cellphones and computers after they upgrade. Recycle old clothing, bedding, old homework, notes and notebooks. Speak to the school administration about recycling at your school if there are not already measures set in place. Encourage other students around you to recycle.

Buy vintage. Create a new wardrobe filled with unique vintage pieces bought at the thrift store. You will break the cycle of consumerism while still looking fashionable. Buying vintage ensures that no one else will show up at school with the same outfit.

Eat organic and vegetarian. Try to spice up your average meals with organic produce and vegetarian fare and even eating vegetarian meals once a week will cut down on your carbon footprint.

Turn off the lights, computer and cellphone charger when you are finished using them. Do your part to preserve by conserving electricity when you are not using your electrical appliances. Do not leave devices on stand-by; turn them off instead.

Replace your shampoos, cosmetics and other beauty products with natural, organic alternatives. Natural beauty products are gentler on the earth and are safer to use on the body. They do not contain harmful and harsh chemicals.

Speak up about environmental issues and start a “green” group at your school. You might consider meeting up to discuss issues, organize a community clean-up or plant trees in your neighborhood.

Making smart transportation choices to conserve energy are important, but your home is significantly larger than any car and it runs 24/7 instead of the hour or so you spend driving each day. Improving your home’s energy use can exert a huge impact on your pocketbook, the planet and the future lifestyles of your great grandchildren.

These older homes need updating based on what we know now, while newer homes need to be adjusted for greater energy conservation. Either way, improvements in energy use at home must be made with a long-term perspective.

Reduce the size of your living space. Consider subdividing larger houses to accommodate multiple households, grow your household to fill the space you have, or just close off rooms you rarely use.

Insulate, insulate, insulate! For older houses, insulate from the inside. On newer houses, you can insulate from the outside. To maximize the insulation’s effectiveness, consistently apply it throughout the house. For example, a well-insulated wall is virtually useless next to an open window. Use foam board insulating sheathing instead of, or apply it on top of, the structural OSB or plywood. It works for both insulation and moisture/condensation control.

Ensure that your home is airtight. Install quality windows (low emissivity coated, double or triple glazed with argon fill gas). Your building supply store should clearly label these. Whenever possible, reduce the size of your windows; they can represent a huge source of air loss.

Landscape. It’s easy to predict the location of the sun throughout the day during each season. In tropical climates, plant trees to shade your home during the hottest hours of the day. If your winter climate is especially cold, choose deciduous trees (those that lose their leaves). They will protect your home from the summer sun, but will let the sun warm your place come winter.

Install energy-efficient appliances including water heater, furnace and air conditioner when necessary. Look for an energy-efficient label at the store. Aim for a tankless instantaneous hot water heater (EF=~0.85), a 90% condensing furnace and a 12 to 13 SEER air conditioner. For warmer climates, get a 14 or higher SEER air conditioner instead.

There are few household tasks that use up more water and energy than laundry, but all hope is not lost. There are several environmentally friendly ways to do your laundry that will not only help the planet, but save you money as well.

Look for the ENERGY STAR label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy have teamed up in a joint program to improve the eco-efficiency of household appliances and practices. If you’re in the market for a new washer and dryer, keep an eye out for the ENERGY STAR label. You are guaranteed the products adhere to the strict guidelines set by both organizations, and you’ll save about $110 a year.

Turn down the heat. Over 90 percent of the energy used on laundry is for heating the water. By simply washing your clothes in cold water instead of hot you will greatly reduce your energy use. Also, you won’t have to worry about a color-blending disaster (which is an added bonus).

Fill it up. Doing less laundry might seem strange, but it’s the best way to cut down on water usage during the whole process. That doesn’t mean you have to live in filth. Just wait until you have a full load before tossing clothes in the washer to cut back on excess water usage.

Air it out. If you have a backyard or rooftop area, install a laundry line for drying your clothes. The more you avoid using the dryer, the less energy you’ll use (and you’ll enjoy lower electricity bills to boot). While outside is best, you can easily set up drying racks and clotheslines in your laundry room or basement that also work well.

Go organic. Cleaning products contain an abundance of harmful chemicals that can damage the environment and your health. Some cleaning products can even affect the air quality of your home, irritate eyes and skin, and cause respiratory problems. For a truly green laundry experience, use organic cleaning supplies. They’re still effective and are made entirely of organic compounds such as grain alcohol, fruit and plant oils, eucalyptus, rosemary, and sage.

Every summer the fleas return, hitching a ride indoors on your unsuspecting pet. Try these non-toxic ways to take back your home from those little bloodsuckers. It’s nothing a few cleaning products can’t solve.

Vacuum-clean all carpets and furniture at least twice a week even before you spot a flea. Physical removal of the eggs, larvae and adult insects is the safest way to keep flea populations under control.

Pay special attention to high-traffic areas, such as stairs and those places where your pet spends a lot of time–for example, next to the bed or under a favorite chair.

Empty, dispose of, or seal off the vacuum bag every time you vacuum. Adult fleas can easily crawl back out.

Wash area rugs and floor mats regularly with hot water or in the washing machine. Dry each thoroughly to avoid creating a perfectly humid breeding ground for the prolific bugs.

Make your own flea remedy by mixing 3 cups diatomaceous earth (DE) for every 1/2 cups boric acid. Sprinkle the powder lightly, yet thoroughly over carpet, under beds and in closets while wearing a safety mask to avoid inhaling the dust. With a broom, work the granules deeply into the carpet.

Try an alternative recipe using 8 parts cleaning powder to 1 part table salt. Follow the above procedure, except you should vacuum after 1 week. These powders work by drying out the fleas’ habitat and dehydrating both the larvae and adults.

Conservation and the green movement gained significant traction within the global population toward the end of the 20th century and the start of the 21st century. In an effort to keep the green movement going, many environmental and governmental agencies developed educational and activist games for kids to learn about “going green.” Games that teach kids about going green appeal to their pre-existing fondness for virtual games.

Energy Quest

Designed by the California Energy Commission, the Energy Quest Room encourages kids to evaluate their household’s energy consumption in an effort to avoid being what the site deems an “energy vampire.” The homepage of the site presents itself as a cartoon bedroom in which students can interact in order to learn more about topics such as “transportation,” “solar facts” and dreaded “energy vampires.” Additionally, the site also offers links to Flash games that rely upon the child’s previous navigation of the site and acquisition of energy conservation information.

Mission to Earth

Designed and offered by the Environmental Protection Agency, the interactive game N. Trubble and the Environauts focuses on an alien planet overwhelmed by waste. The game is modeled as a quest, with students reading and interacting with the program in an effort to help the planet Ergon dig out from its accumulating trash problem. As children read and play the game, they solve problems and answer information-based questions related to conservation, waste management and recycling.

Lose Your Excuse

Maintained by the U.S. Department of Energy, the interactive Lose Your Excuse site focuses on encouraging kids to break the habit of being lazy when it comes to energy conservation. The site features the game Energy Rescue, in which a character named Watts travels through a two-dimensional world collecting energy to be deposited at a power plant. As he collects energy, Watts must avoid “pesky excuses” that could prevent him from either gathering energy or dropping it off at the plant.

Urgent Evoke

A combination of virtual and real-life social gaming, Urgent Evoke bases its play on real-life missions that are reported through the gaming system. Though many levels relate to global problems such as famine or empowering women, other missions or quests relate to topics such as water crises and energy shortages. By successfully marrying interactive, virtual gaming and comics with real-life social activism, Urgent Evoke enables kids to directly apply knowledge about going green to their everyday lives.

Unplugging appliances and electronics “that glow” and you could save $200 a year. In the United Kingdom, business owners who drive vehicles with combustible engines must pay a “congestion tax” of $20 per day per vehicle. And every ton of paper recycled saves 7, 000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil and enough electricity to power the average house for six months.

Make a few simple changes and do your part to go green. Small actions can create big change, especially when it comes to the environment. Here are 10 low-cost ways to lessen your impact on the planet and create a healthier, more eco-friendly office.

Start a recycling program at work. Many people are die-hard recyclers at home, but drop their guard against waste at work. Purchase special recyclable materials containers and make everyone aware of the effort to recycle

Save and recycle your empties. Laser toner and inkjet cartridges may be recycled.

Make it a habit to turn off lights when you are leaving any room for 15 minutes or more. Rely on natural lighting as much as possible.

Bring your lunch to work in reusable containers rather than purchasing carry-out or ordering food to be delivered, both of which create a significant amount of waste in the form of wrappers, cups, implements, bags and boxes. If you do go out for lunch, bicycle or walk instead of driving.

Print smarter. The average U.S office worker goes through 10,000 sheets of copy paper a year. Make it a habit to print on both sides or use the backsides of old documents for faxes or drafts. Print email messages only when it is necessary.

Look for products that help conserve energy, such as longer-life, eco-friendly light bulbs and energy-efficient printers, copiers and faxes. Use power strips that stop idle current. They monitor power consumption and shut off the power when the equipment has sat on but idle for a specific period of time.

Create less waste in the office. Buy products made to last longer or reuse items you already have to keep them out of the landfill. Buy file folders made of 100 percent recycled materials, for example, for $12.99 per box; or buy regular file folders with double-ply tabs that may be reused again and again for $1 more. Purchase 3 x 3 adhesive notes instead of the 4×6 size.

Give computers to a local school, community college or nonprofit agency rather than sending them to a landfill. Donate old cell phones to any of innumerable nonprofits that collect them.

Contact the senders of unwanted newsletters, magazines or catalogs and ask to be removed from their mailing lists.

Keep extra clothes at your place of work. When the temperature falls, put on a another layer instead of asking for more heat.
