Going Green: Games that would teach Children How Important Going Green Is

Conservation and the green movement gained significant traction within the global population toward the end of the 20th century and the start of the 21st century. In an effort to keep the green movement going, many environmental and governmental agencies developed educational and activist games for kids to learn about “going green.” Games that teach kids about going green appeal to their pre-existing fondness for virtual games.

Energy Quest

Designed by the California Energy Commission, the Energy Quest Room encourages kids to evaluate their household’s energy consumption in an effort to avoid being what the site deems an “energy vampire.” The homepage of the site presents itself as a cartoon bedroom in which students can interact in order to learn more about topics such as “transportation,” “solar facts” and dreaded “energy vampires.” Additionally, the site also offers links to Flash games that rely upon the child’s previous navigation of the site and acquisition of energy conservation information.

Mission to Earth

Designed and offered by the Environmental Protection Agency, the interactive game N. Trubble and the Environauts focuses on an alien planet overwhelmed by waste. The game is modeled as a quest, with students reading and interacting with the program in an effort to help the planet Ergon dig out from its accumulating trash problem. As children read and play the game, they solve problems and answer information-based questions related to conservation, waste management and recycling.

Lose Your Excuse

Maintained by the U.S. Department of Energy, the interactive Lose Your Excuse site focuses on encouraging kids to break the habit of being lazy when it comes to energy conservation. The site features the game Energy Rescue, in which a character named Watts travels through a two-dimensional world collecting energy to be deposited at a power plant. As he collects energy, Watts must avoid “pesky excuses” that could prevent him from either gathering energy or dropping it off at the plant.

Urgent Evoke

A combination of virtual and real-life social gaming, Urgent Evoke bases its play on real-life missions that are reported through the gaming system. Though many levels relate to global problems such as famine or empowering women, other missions or quests relate to topics such as water crises and energy shortages. By successfully marrying interactive, virtual gaming and comics with real-life social activism, Urgent Evoke enables kids to directly apply knowledge about going green to their everyday lives.
