#357: 90 Year Old Twin Sisters Who Grow Beautiful Garden! [lovely!]

May 6th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

90-year-old twins Bernice Wade and Barbara Stiles grow and maintain beautiful, lovely garden in their Chapel Hill garden! The garden is opened to visitors.

If you are interested in expanding your knowledge about gardening, if you are interested in taking gardening classes, you may have vetoed the plan or idea because you feel that your schedule will not permit you the ability to sign up for gardening classes. Indeed, most people in this day and age have very little free time in their lives. They barely have time to take care of the basic needs of their lives after they leave work for the day.

With that said, even if you are a typical, fully scheduled man or women, there are options available to you through which you can take gardening classes, or participate in gardening forums, that do not take up a great deal of your time. These are ways in which you can take part in gardening classes and still not overload your own schedule in the process.

There are Internet website venues that deal specifically with providing gardening classes. These sites offer a wide range of different types of programs – all of which are designed to make a person participating a more capable gardener. Generally speaking there is a charge for participation in these programs.

If you would rather not spend additional money on taking online gardening courses on the Net, consider signing up for online programs that are offered by merchants and vendors and retailers that are involved in the selling of gardening supplies and materials. Many gardening retailers offer to their customers — at no charge — different educational opportunities when it comes to gardening and advancing a person’s knowledge of gardening.

In addition to these learning options, some colleges and universities offer online instructional opportunities when it comes to gardening in the 21st century. Again, more often than not there will be some charge associated with these types of educational programs offered by colleges and universities. (In some instances, some institutions of higher learning do offer these programs at reduced costs for senior citizens. Therefore, an older person can participate in these types of programs without breaking their budget in the process.)

Learning more about gardening will make you a better gardener in both the near and distant future. Because there are so many changes in the arena of gardening all of the time, educational programs can keep you abreast of all the changes and innovations in the world of gardening.

More about Flower Gardening

Flower gardening is becoming more and more popular every day. Flowers can brighten everyone’s day, they smell nice, and are a great hobby. Flower gardening is simple, inexpensive, and loads of fun. Flower gardening can be done for yard decoration, simply as a hobby, or even professionally.

There are some decisions that have to be made before even flower gardening can be started. You must decide if you want annuals that live for one season and must be replanted every year, or perennials that survive the winter and return again in the summer. When buying and planting, pay attention to what kind of flowers thrive in your climate as well ass the sun requirements.

When flower gardening, you must decide what type of look you want before planting. For instance, mixing different heights, colors, and varieties of flowers together in a “wild-plant style” will give your garden a meadow look and can be very charming. If short flowers are planted in the front of your garden and work up to the tallest flowers in the back you will have a “stepping stone style”.

You can order seeds for flower gardening from catalogues or buy them from a nursery. Most people will go to the nursery and buy actual flowers and then transplant them. After you have prepared your garden area and bought flowers, it is a good idea to lay the flowers out in the bed to make sure you like the arrangement and that they will be spaced properly.
One of the easiest processes in flower gardening is the planting/ if you have seeds just sprinkle them around in the flower bed. For planting transplants dig a hole just bigger than the flower, pull the container off, and set the flower in the hole right side up. Cover it with the loose soil and press down firmly, then water.

Maintaining a flower garden is even easier than planting one. Although they might make it on their own, a bag of fertilizer applied in the early spring is a good idea. Pinch back any blooms after they start to fade and keep them good and watered.

To save yourself work during the next season of flower gardening, rid your garden of all debris and spread out organic nutrients like peat moss or compost. Don’t forget to turn over the soil to properly mix in the fertilizer and rake smooth when finished. If you have perennials planted be careful not to disturb their roots in this process.

Flower gardening is as easy as 1, 2, and 3: simply decide what to plant; plant it, and water, water, water! Flower gardening is undoubtedly gaining in popularity and gives anyone excellent reason to spend some outdoors and test out their green thumb.

Persist in growing your own lovely, beautiful garden, just like the elderly twin sisters! :)

Cake decorating cam be a wonderful hobby and is a great way to express your creativity. Cake decorating is a lot of fun and very rewarding, if you feel you like it well enough you can turn it into a full time profession.

Cake decorating does take a measure of artistic skill. Anyone can master cake making with guidance and tutoring, along with fresh, new ideas and decorating tips. Cake decorating as an art form, will help you expand your imagination and your skills. This will make you proud and the recipient of your work ecstatic.

The art of cake decorating is rewarding to both the client and the decorator of the cake. There may be a level of stress when you are on a deadline but the end result is worth the trouble. When you are able to take your time and decorate cakes in peace, you will find the entire process very enjoyable. One way to cut stress in any situation, is to keep your mind on the design itself, and not let negative thoughts get in the way of your creativity.

When you begin Cake decorating, start off with simple designs and decorations. You can even start with cupcakes and cookies. You can also use stencils and edible marker kits. A stencil will allow you to dust your cupcakes with cocoa powder or powdered sugar over the top and make a wonderful, yet simple design.

You can use buttercream, royal icing, or fondant to create your cake decorating project. You can start by topping your cakes with icing and adding icing flowers, fruit or candy. You can also make cakes that look like other foods. Hotdogs, hamburgers, pizza, and even cakes that look like fruit. You can do this by using a molded cake pan, or cutting the cake and piecing it together. You can also create character cake decorations. Make sure your cake is moist and not crumbly so it will stay together better when cut.

You need to eliminate crumbs in your cake icing, and create a smooth finish to create a beautiful cake decorating project. Icing the cake to a smooth, fine finish is considered to be one of the most important parts of cake decorating and should be fine tuned as your skills develop.

The use of fondant icing will add an air of elegance to your cake decorating. Fondant can be rolled out and draped over a cake with care. It can also be modeled into shapes and characters. #355: Read these for chic lifestyle and fashion tips! (lots of wardrobe inspiration)

April 20th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

Are you always looking for chic lifestyle and fashion statements???

Nothing makes more of a statement than having a sophisticated “idea resource” at my fingertips for days at the beach, nights on the town and dinner parties at home.

Fashion and chic lifestyle

At your next get-together, unleash your inner fashionista, try out the links provided below. When the party heats up, bear your shoulders with a silk halter dress in vivid green. And bejewel yourself with a green and gold jeweled brocade bag that won’t set your budget back, but will spring your inner princess forward.

Accessories are the DNA of lasting glamour, so who wants to be seen in something a million other women already own? Opt instead for a brass cameo bracelet by Michael Negrin, who creates vintage-inspired jewels made to help you feel like a Victorian queen. Or add a dazzling yet delicate multistrand pearl necklace to your gem collection. Wear it the way I do-with a cocktail dress-and you’ll be the envy of all the “gem setters” at the party.

I’m forever collecting shoes. Shoes for meetings, shoes for the beach and shoes for parties. That’s why I’m excited about the metallic snake-embossed sandal-a chain of jewels adds a touch of elegance, taking me seamlessly from day into night.

Glamour doesn’t start and end with fashion. It extends to every aspect of life (it does for me, at least). A party is the perfect excuse to decorate, redecorate or simply add a few glam accents to your divine temple.

At online shops, you can dive into anything from Asian-inspired embroidered decorative shams to a crystal candelabra with antique flair.

Entertaining at home is an exceptional craft and I’ve discovered a new culinary goddess-Donatella Arpaia, of the famed Bellini, David Burke & Donatella, and Ama restaurants in New York City. She’s my favorite authority on entertaining.

Elements of Ama’s celebrated Italian-style entertaining, such as the Essential Sauce made with pure tomatoes and extra virgin Fruttato Olive Oil, are now available, so you can provide gourmet dining for your guests without the five-star price tag.

#354: Go for precious vintage finds and hunt!

awesome vintage finds

Bored this weekend? Go for precious vintage finds and hunt!

Antiques can be a great reminder of our family, history, or even an exotic touch from another place and time. Caring for these items properly ensures that they can be passed down to another generation or sold for their highest value.

Vintage finds and Furniture

The following is a brief overview of caring for your vintage and antique collectibles.

1) PAPER:
Paper needs to be stored properly to preserve its value. Use acid-free and archival quality storage.

If you have a book that needs to be cleaned, use air to blow off dust and particles. Never wipe a book with a rag.

Don’t store books and papers in sunlight – it will cause fading.

2) GLASS, POTTERY and PORCELAIN:
Wash individually in a padded washing basin to prevent chips. Use warm water – never hot or cold – and a gentle cleanser with a soft bristled brush. Never wash antique glass or dishes in the dishwasher since the extreme heat and harsh detergent may be harmful. Gently wipe glasses dry or allow dishes to air dry.

Store and display glass and dishes in a safe place away from heavy traffic. Avoid displaying on an open shelf, rail or on the wall, especially if there is heavy traffic through that area.

3) RUGS and TEXTILES:
Rugs and textiles require extremely gentle handling when moving, storing and cleaning.

Moving should be done slowly and carefully as antique fabrics are delicate and can easily tear or pull apart.

Rugs should be rolled with the pile facing outwards to prevent crushing or damage.

Garments should be hung on sturdy hangers and covered in white cotton or rolled with acid free paper and tied closed on either end.

Rugs and textiles can be cleaned gently with a vacuum on a low setting. Be very careful with textiles as the suction can pull fibers apart. For spills it is recommended by BBC Antiques to put white paper towels under the rug and above, replacing them until no more liquid comes out. Any other cleaning should be done by an expert. Avoid exposure to sun or humidity.

4) FURNITURE:
Dusting should be done with a soft, lint-free cloth. Wood furniture should only be waxed with quality beeswax. Avoid placing furnishings in bright light or in rooms which experience great changes in temperature or humidity. Be very cautious when moving antique furniture, always lifting and never dragging.

5) JEWELRY:
Clean with a soft brush, like a makeup brush, to remove dust. Next use windex, or other window type cleaner, and a very soft toothbrush to polish and clean. Do not use soap, or harsh abrasive.

It is a great privilege to own antiques and proper care will help your investment increase in value or enable you to pass them on for the enjoyment of your family.

#352: Turn wood into art!

April 12th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

Loved this story of how one person turns unwanted wood into art. He quits his day job and gets to do what he loves to do!

tree art

Phillips is well-known in Galveston and surrounding areas for his ability to transform wood into art.

It was a talent he discovered in a roundabout way.

“When I was a child, my mother taught me to draw,” Phillips said. “Then I didn’t make any art for 30 years.”

One day, he was cutting down a tree in his yard, and something clicked. A pelican emerged.

Phillips recalls being surprised at first.

“Then I went nuts,” he said. “I started making stuff all the time.”

After Galveston was hit by Hurricane Ike, Phillips created sculptures out of the trees destroyed by the storm surge.

The works helped him gain a following for his commissioned pieces. “I quit my day job and have been doing this ever since,” he said. “I’ve been having so much fun, you can’t believe it.”

#349: Handcrafted skulls can become a cherished heirloom!

March 18th, 2013 § 0 comments § permalink

Home accents and surroundings today offer much more opportunity for self expression.

Don't be afraid to try something different. I'd rather decorate my home with items that appeal to my own individuality, than adhere to someone's standards of what is the norm. Artisan crafted products truly create the ability to make one's castle their own.

The charm of artisan crafted items is in the originality it provides. Decoupage is a popular craft that turns ordinary items into incredible works of art. A simple glass bowl becomes a cherished heirloom. You can turn a tray or platter into a relative's favorite gift. The possibilities are limitless, and the works created are quite stunning.

I simply love seeing an artist at work! Try handcrafting a skull!

Don't forget your walls! Everyone has paintings and photos adorning their walls. Be different, add a piece of metal wall art. There are patterns available for everyone's taste, so don't be shy. Try something new and out of the ordinary. Like the title says, don't be afraid to step out of the box. You'll be rewarded with a home that is a representation of your unique personality. Last, but not least, simple accessories provide the finishing touch to your unique home. The small things sometimes make the most difference.

#348: Use these amazing space saving ideas!

December 30th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

These furniture are so amazing!

Interior furniture is any type of furniture that you place throughout your home. This furniture has several things that you should consider. First of all, it is designed to keep the look and the feel of your home the way that you want it. It should reflect the decorating style that your prefer. It should also be as functional as you need it to be. That may mean in size and in use. Finally, the interior furniture that you select should be of the highest quality so that you get long lasting beauty that is well worth the investment, and if your house or apartment is small, you have to consider flexible furniture that save space!

The interior furniture needs to function in several ways. It should fit well within the room that you want to place it in, in the matter of size. Crowding a room with too much makes it overwhelming. Second, it needs to provide for enough seating for your family. If you have children, look for furniture that is stain guarded and easy to take care of as well. The function of the pieces of furniture should also help to enhance the items such as wall coverings, carpeting and other elements that you already have. Or, you’ll need to replace these.
